New Year’s Resolution: Make a Budget

Here’s why your New Year’s resolution should be to make a budget.

Here we are, at the start of a new year, and it’s time for our New Year’s resolutions. Yep, we’re all going to the gym, we’re all going to lose weight, and maybe we’ll make a budget this year.

I’m actually serious about the last one. Having a budget is really, really important. It can make all the difference in your financial success. There’s a saying in business or sports: what gets measured gets improved upon. You might know where your money is, you might know how much you’re making, but the problem is you probably don’t know what you’re spending. So if we can figure out where your money is going, there’s probably all sorts of areas where you’re leaking money. You know, subscriptions you’re not using, or maybe too many trips to Starbucks, et cetera. It can add up to lots and lots and lots of money over the course of a year. Take 10, 15 minutes, either by yourself or with your partner, and see where your money is going. See where you can save and take the extra money to pay off debt, pay down your mortgage, and invest. All of those things will help you get ahead!

If you have questions, you can reach me by phone or email.

I also have a helpful video about why now is a good time to get a variable-rate mortgage.
